An article by Mary Miller on thehairpin.com titled, “What was in Janis Joplin’s Handbag,” shares an interesting story about Janis Joplin. When in 1970, while traveling with a young writer, the singer accidentally emptied the contents of her handbag while fumbling for a lighter. The contents, as later documented by the writer, David Dalton, offered an interesting window into the life of the rock and roller.

Miller’s short article includes facts and pictures surrounding the incident that occurred just three months before Joplin’s death; As well as an excerpt from Dalton’s later book, “Piece of My Heart,” where he entertainingly describes the purse-spilling scene.

It got me to wonder what the contents of my purse would say about me; Which inspired me to clean out my purse.
